Professional Experience

I started my professional career as a freelance interviewer in 1990. Since then, I've made my way upwards in the market research industry, working mostly in the supplier side in the FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) industry. I worked extensively in South America and in Australia. I've joined IDP in February 2001. I 'succumbed to the transition' in December 2004.

I have sound experience in managing a wide range of quantitative and qualitative marketing research projects. I have expertise in designing projects briefs, methodology and sampling, fieldwork implementation, focus groups and in-depth interview moderation, and most importantly, analysis and preparation of reports. I have also experience in analysing business plans, strategy papers and market analysis, and to put market research into the context of business planning and client's strategic needs. I have expertise in international policy analysis related to the international education industries.

I obtained a Bachelor Degree (with Honours) in Sociology (with a specialisation in research methodology), in the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Marcelo is a member of the European Society of Market Research (The World's Association of Research Professionals) , ESOMAR's mission is to promote the use of public opinion and market research for improving decision-making in bsiness and society worldwide. Business Objectives:

  • To be engaged by the international education community in Australia and overseas as a consultant and contractor in marketing and marketing research projects.
  • To actively work in collaboration with other international education consultants (business-to-business) from Australia and the world in international education marketing and marketing research projects
  • Given my experience and knowledge of the South American market, I aspire to become the preferred consultant for the expansion of the Australian and Asia-Pacific international education industries in South America. As a member of the ALABC (Australian Latin American Business Council), I would like to contribute to the understanding of the issues related to the trade relations between Australia, Asia/Pacific and South America, particularly in the area of education services.

Technical Competencies:

  • Marketing: Experience in working on brand marketing, product development, media and promotions, customer and client satisfaction research.
  • Research Process: Experience in all phases of research projects such as briefing, tendering, sample design, fieldwork launch and supervision, results presentation, final report, final recommendations. During my time in IDP I conducted a wide range of industry and corporate research projects, with strong satisfaction from internal clients.
  • Methodology and sample design: Experience in designing samples for qualitative and quantitative research. Probabilistic sampling based on population statistics and selected target groups. As part of IDP Education Australia, I designed a wide range of samples using resources and data available. Experience in designing samples with international students.
  • Fieldwork: Experience in carrying face-to-face interviews, CATI interviews, focus groups, in-depth interviews, shopping centers interviews and executive interviews. During my time in IDP, I implemented fieldworks for different international education research projects as well as for customer and client satisfaction research projects
  • International marketing research: Experience in coordinating multi-country market research projects. Experience in international research with students from Asia, Europe, United States and Latin America. Desk-research: Experience in using economic and social data for policy and market analysis. Sound experience in producing reports which combine primary and secondary research.
  • Marketing intelligence: Strong experience in analysing competitor information, domestic and international trends, and turning data into a meaningful analysis of current and future market trends. Sound experience in producing papers and reports in relation to international education marketing intelligence.
  • Qualitative Research: Experience in conducting in-depth interviews and moderating focus groups. Experience in managing qualitative research projects for brand tests, advertising tests and segmentation research. Sound expertise in managing focus groups with international students from different nationalities and backgrounds. During my time in IDP, I also carried out projects to evaluate perceptions of institutional collateral marketing materials.
  • Quantitative Research: Experience in managing quantitative research on brand image, advertising tests, customer and client satisfaction, market segmentation, pricing, forecasting and market positioning. Experience in managing, implementing and auditing tracking studies. Experience in managing a wide range of quantitative research projects for international education research (see publications), as well as for corporate marketing activities.
  • Media research: Experience qualitative and quantitative analysis in media impact & evaluation such as analysis of media usage, internet penetration, outdoor advertising evaluation, promotional activities (discos, bars, night sampling, sports events). I have experience in the analysis of brand image attributes in concept tests and TV, magazines, brochures and collateral materials campaigns.
  • Overall management: Sound experience in managing teams and suppliers. Efficient time and resource management.
  • Presentation skills: Sound experience in preparing presentations and documents for public speaking. Sound experience as a presenter in domestic and international forums.
